A trousseau turns into feminine art

STEPS OF A WOMAN….STEPS FOR PEACE
The cloth used for Steps of a Woman…steps for peace, has been guarded for more than a century in the Nunnery of “Suore Visitatrici
dell’Immacolata”, in Bologna (Italy), via Santo Stefano, 58, in a very old and large noble palace in the historic centre of Bologna. It was built in the XVII century, and belonged to Conti Gozzadimi family.
The cloth comes from the Nunnery, because it was an integrating part of the trousseau that the future nun took with her as a dowry, when she was about to enter a convent.
It is made from cultivated hemp, span and woven with a loom by the women of the nun’s family.
The hemp growing has been a typical activity in the Bologna area, till the middle of the latest century.
To weave it was considered very important, because it represented the richness of the family.
It was the most important element for trousseaus before a wedding.
Women made, from this cloth: petticoats, skirts, shirts of every type, sheets, table clothes, dishclothes, kids wears. Each member of the future family, had to use this fabric.
